Green tracks is an intergenerational education and participation project by THE CIVICS Innovation Hub that brings together 24 participants from three generations (Gen Z, middle-aged, and older adults) from North Rhine-Westphalia. At its centre is a two-day rally through the Ruhr metropolitan region: travelling to exemplary sites of industrial and ecological change, tandems of young and old participants explore what socio-ecological transformation looks like in practice – and how citizens can actively contribute to it. The programme combines digital onboarding through two online workshops, experience-based learning on site, and a public closing event in Bonn.
Green tracks
Sustainability rally through the Ruhr region
#OurFutureEurope
Why
The Ruhr metropolitan region exemplifies Germany’s profound transformation: post-industrial change, the energy transition, and a growing societal divide between generations. There is a lack of low-threshold, intergenerational learning formats that connect local experiences with questions about the future. Green tracks fills this gap through participatory education and experience-based learning at real sites of transformation, strengthening civic competences, fostering empathy between generations, and empowering participants to become local multipliers for sustainability.
