Economic & Financial Literacy Incubator Workshop

Hosted by the BELvue Museum in Brussels, THE CIVICS Innovation Hub organized jointly with the Croatian foundation Znanje na djelu its first so-called Incubator Workshop, with the support of the ERSTE Stiftung. An incubator workshop is a flagship format of THE CIVICS which focuses on interdisciplinarity to boost innovation in civic education. In other words, we bring together civic educators with professionals from other fields and use methods like design thinking to support the participants in designing, ideating and piloting innovative educational ideas. From the 24th to the 26th of October we focused on the intersection between economic & financial literacy and civic education.

In 2,5 days civic educators, economists, film makers, museum directors, curators, and social media influencers from 5 European countries managed to come up with three ideas on how to explain the economic and financial implications of the war in Ukraine with the tools of civic education to 15- to 18-year-old teenagers. The workshop was launched with inputs by two economists – Vedrana Pribičević from the Zagreb School of Economics and Management in Croatia and Adrian Nikolov from the Institute for Market Economics in Bulgaria and was followed by a comment from Valeriia Hulkovych, a Ukrainian civic education expert at the University of Göttingen in Germany. By the end of the workshop, three teams designed project ideas that use methods like working with storytelling and eyewitnesses, board games, and school project weeks. With the support of THE CIVICS the teams will have the opportunity to develop the ideas into project proposals and seek support for the implementation. More about the Incubator Workshops as an interdisciplinary exchange format to foster innovation in civic education, and specifically about the Economic & Financial Literacy Incubator Workshop projects can be found here.
